Another Sun

A lyrical interrogation of the legacies of slavery and anticolonial movements, featuring contributions by Françoise Vergès, Aimé Césaire, Wole Soyinka, and Danielle Legros Georges.

In 2005, Françoise Vergès and Aimé Césaire published Nègre je suis, nègre je resterai, a seminal conversation centering on Césaire’s life and the origins of his anticolonial politics and writing. Now, a generation later, poet and writer Mayra A. Rodríguez Castro revisits that interview with Vergès, unearthing stories of Vergès’ childhood in Réunion, her political formation and early sense of international solidarity, the long history of resistance to French and British colonialism and US imperialism, and the importance of feminism that is decolonial and antiracist. Rodríguez Castro and Vergès’ wide-ranging conversation insists, too, on the profound links between poetry and politics, building on Césaire’s insistence that “justice listens at the gates of beauty.”

Featuring an introduction by Rodríguez Castro and poems written in the wake of and against empire, by poets including Danielle Legros Georges, Wole Soyinka, Ishion Hutchinson, Clarisse Baleja Saïdi, Aimé Césaire, and Jean Érian Samson, Another Sun is a luminous, eclectic text shaped by ongoing struggles.

Mayra A. Rodríguez Castro is a writer and editor. She was a postdoctoral fellow at Freie Universität Berlin in 2018, recipient of a fellowship with Anne Waldman at Naropa University in 2019, and a textual residency fellow at Akademie Schloss Solitude in 2025. Rodríguez Castro is the editor of Dream of Europe: Selected Seminars and Interviews, 1984–1992 (2020), a collection of previously unpublished lectures by Audre Lorde, which was shortlisted for the Pegasus Award for Poetry Criticism in 2021. She is also the author of The Echo (2025) and Blood (2026).

Françoise Vergès is a writer, decolonial antiracist feminist, and curator. She writes on the afterlife of slavery and colonization, psychiatry, the museum and climate disaster. She is the author of A Decolonial Feminism, A Feminist History of Violence, and A Programme of Absolute Disorder. She is also a senior research fellow at the Sarah Parker Remond Centre for the Study of Racism and Racialisation, University College London. She lives in Paris.
